Hi Chris, You need to ask Ed Hochuli & Scott Hochuli on this one. I have seen many players touched by Referee's & Officials(helping them gain their ground). I have noticed that in many plays that the Officials help the players up after the play has been called dead. Not too sure if there is a call that a player has a question about & taps an Official. Maybe Ed & Scott Hochuli will answer this question Becky

Players may not touch officials, however, it is more of a case by case basis thing.
This picture seems more like Peppers is looking for Ed's attention, or an explanation of the call. The official will let that slide every time. But, if the official feels threatened by the player grabbing him, then the player will get ejected from the game.

Well I heard Troy Aikman tell a story about a time where Ed was working his game, he felt he was roughed and ran down the field to get Ed's attention and was going so fast that he ran into Ed and fans were upset because Ed did not throw the flag he just stood their and listened to what Troy had to say.

As you have been told, a player may not touch an official, but is usually a case by case basis, for instance trying to get the officials attention, helping an official to their feet... Other than than, it is a offense that if flagged is an automatic ejection from the game. In the 2005 Season, versus Dallas, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith got ejected from the game after making contact with a line judge after he got hit late out of bounds, trying to protest to the line judge as to why a flag was not thrown.. Apparently he bumped into or grabbed the official.. Well the official did throw a flag, then ejected Smith..

I remember that Smith should not have been ejected from the game Bad ejection by the official & I am a Cowboy's fan, if Smith is not ejected Carolina wins that game not Dallas.

Ed is also wearing his "Support Our Troops" wristband which he has been wearing for the past two years.
