LAKE OSWEGO -- A Palisades Elementary School student died this afternoon after being struck in the throat by a football during a recess game.

The fifth-grade boy, whose name was not released by the school district, was playing flag football with a group of students after lunch at the Lake Oswego school.

District officials said he attempted to block a punt and it hit him in the throat. He collapsed to the ground, unable to breathe, and students immediately alerted the on-duty teacher.

According to Principal Carol Whitten, as the teacher attempted CPR, other staff used hand-held radios to summon help from the Lake Oswego Fire Department. An ambulance and two firetrucks responded, said fire spokesman Gert Zoutendijk

The boy died at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin shortly after the accident. His mother was with him, Whitten said in an e-mail to parents. Details on the type of injury were not available today.

Flag football is a "typical recess behavior," said Lake Oswego Superintendent Bill Korach. And there was adult supervision during the recess. But "I'm sure we will go back through it and see how things unfolded."

"Right now, our primary concern is for the family, the teachers and staff and the families at Palisades," he said.

None of the students at the school knew the accident was fatal. Palisades Principal Carol Whitten e-mailed parents at the end of the school day with the news, asking them to tell their children.

The 300-student school is tucked in the hills south of Oswego Lake near Lakeridge High School and has a strong parent community.

"We are in shock and grief and will continue to keep you informed of our efforts to support the family and our school family during this sad time," Whitten wrote to parents.

School counselors and additional staff were available at the school today and will continue to work with students Wednesday.

It looks like they jumped to conclusions. Apparently, it was a blow to the chest that caused a heart failure, and not to the throat.
I haven't played flag/touch football in years, esp. not at family gatherings and such. Too many amateurs get out there and think/play like it's tackle, and then someone gets hurt, too often a child.
I got a nice cut two weeks ago from a player who ran into my glasses/face two weeks ago. We (almost) need helmets out there, not hats.
