i have a kinda stupid question , but here goes anyway. If a team fails to score on 4th down and leaves the ball 3 inches from the goal line , where do the officils spot the ball for the opposing team to take over on offense. if the nose of the ball is the line of scrimmage , and u turn it around , then the ball would now be in the end zone ??? anyone know ....... thanx in advance

Welcome aboard Bucko914,

From what I know, which isn't much, the only time the "tip" of the ball is taken into consideration is on chain measurements, and crossing the plane of the goal line. So, in the normal course of the game, and spotting the ball after a ball carrier is takled, the center of the ball is used. Therefore, on a change of possession on the 3 inch line, the ball wouldn't move at all.

Hopefully, that makes sense?

On a change of possession in which the ball comes back to the previous spot, the spot of the ball should not be changed from its position before the previous play. In other words, the nose of the football will become the "tail" of the football and the "tail" of the football will become the nose of the football. The team taking over possession technically gains a few inches on a COP, but these inches are irrelevant throughout the course of the game. I will add that I am not an NFL official, so do not know if this is correct for NFL rules, but this would be correct for other rule codes (college, high school).
