NFL85, I had a question about illegal forward passes that I was hoping you could answer. In the Dallas VS Green Bay gam they called #80 of GB for an illegal forward pass, he threw it to a WR after Rodgers threw him the ball, however when Mike Carey called this penalty they let GB replay first down, however when a QB throws the pass beyond the Line of Scrimmage it is a loss of down why is this? The Referee will announce both these penalties as illegal forward passes.

If it was first down after enforcement of the penalty for an illegal forward pass, then the penalty must have left the ball beyond the line-to-gain. The loss-of-down provision of a penalty has no significance if the foul occurs after a change of possession or if the enforcement of the penalty leaves the ball beyond the line-to-gain.

The difference is where the illegal forward pass was thrown from. In the NFL an illegal forward pass (or second pass) that was thrown from behind the line of scrimmage is a five yard peanlty and replay the down. However, an illegal forward pass thrown beyond the line of scrimmage is a 5 yard penalty plus a loss of down.
