When the ball was snapped and Griese didn't touch it, a false start was called. Where is that rule and why is that a rule?

Hi Chicagoray,

Here is the ruling on the False Start in week #7 of Bears VS Eagles Game:

Because the ball was snapped beyond the quarterback(or between his legs) under center, the play is whistled dead. Chicago was hit with a false start(5 yard penalty)

The Quarterback has to be the one to get the ball, since he is the one under center.

If the quarterback is in Shotgun & the ball is snapped over his head, clean play, pick up the ball & go.

I hope this helps you in the explaination.

Best Wishes,

Becky

Well done Ed with the explanation of this rule! I just saw this play for the first time on NFL Network's Official Review segment. I consider myself very well versed in the rules of football, but I learned something new here!
