Based on assignments for the first two rounds, it looks like Jeff Triplette and Terry McAulay will be the referees next week. Each of their crews worked the first round with different referees. This usually means that Triplette and McAulay ranked in the top 3 referees this year.

Other officials who were subbed off and probably will work next week:
Butch Hannah, Jim Mello, Steve Stelljes, Jeff Bergman, Scott Steenson, Tom Sifferman, Rick Patterson, Greg Meyer, Perry Paganelli, Greg Steed

Possible Referees for Super Bowl
Walt Coleman, Ed Hochuli, Walt Anderson, Mike Carey

Hi Ravenclaw,

From what Mike Pereira - VP of Officiating said is that 8 officials work the Wildcard games and the top 3 of the 8 officials go on as individuals to work the 2 Conference Championships & 1 Super Bowl(NFL.com - Video Officials Review).

Here are the Men who are working the Playoffs - Walt Coleman, Scott Green, Walt Anderson, Ed Hochuli, Mike Carey, Jerome Boger, Gerald Austin & Pete Morellii. (Note: I could be wrong Ravenclaw on who Officiates the Championship Games & Super Bowl -*Shrug*).

Going Back 7 years in the Super Bowl:

XXXV - Gerry Austin - 2nd Time
XXXVI - Bernie Kukar - 2nd Time
XXXVII - Bill Carollo
XXXVIII - Ed Hochuli - 2nd Time
XXXIX - Terry McAulay
XL - Bill Leavy
XLI - Tony Corrente

2008 - XLII - :?:

From what I view on who might work the Super Bowl --- Ed Hochuli, Mike Carey or Walt Anderson.

Becky

The top 3 of ALL playoff-eligible officials will be assigned to the Conference Championship and Super Bowl, not just top 3 of those who worked the first round. Statistically speaking, if a crew has at least 1 or 2 members ranked in the top 3, there is a good chance that crew will work in WC/Div rounds (as we have seen in the past). For the Conf. Champ., officials will only work that 1 game. Therefore, if their reg. season crew is selected, they will be subbed out (this gives other guys with good grades a chance to work). For the SB, officials will generally work a WC or Div. game, especially if their reg. season crew is working. If their crew didn't make it, generally they will appear as "sub-ins", or more rarely as alternates. It is definitely not unprecedented for an official to work as an alternate or not at all, and then work the SB. I believe this happened a few times in 2005/2006.

Going back to my previous post, those officials I mentioned were subbed off their crews, so there is a high probability they will be working next week. There is a small chance those officials were subbed out because they didn't rank high enough. For example, Triplette's crew had 4 people subbed out. IF those 4 officials didn't rank high enough, it would be quite hard to see that crew grading high enough to get an assignment.

Also, I believe some concern is given to officials who have a good year but haven't worked playoffs recently. This helps to allow everyone to get an assignment every year or so and to keep the same guys from working every year.

I may be wrong, but I believe all officials who grade high enough to be eligible for a post season assignment split the "pot" (post season payroll), even if they are an alternate or do not work.I believe this was a result of the recent negotiations between the NFLRA and the NFL.

I hope I understand this correctly...please correct me if I am wrong. We definitely could use a "Hochuli-esque" explanation.

My take on the NFL Officials for:

Conference Championship(AFC/NFC) - 2008

Terry McAulay #77
Bill Carollo #63

Super Bowl XLII - 2008

Mike Carey #94

Anyone else have any opinions :?: :?: :?:

Becky---

I'll take, just because I can, (ha)

McAulay 77

Steratore 114

for the Conference and.....

for the SUPERBOWL. I'll venture a TOTAL GUESS at

either. Carollo 63 or Morelli 135 or Leavy 127

the PRO BOWL. Gerry had it last year, so I'll give to either Nemmers, since he is hanging up the whistle, or to Ed or Corrente

Hi Ryan,

Thank you very much Ryan  :D

By the way I watched & taped Super Bowl 32. This was Ed Hochuli's 1st Super Bowl he officiated. I forgot how much slimmer he was back in the 1994 to 1997 time frame. Those were the days I remember Ed Officiating alot of games that were aired in my area(South Central Texas). I also found a video of Ed Hochuli officiating a Conference Game in 1995. It was a game between The Packers VS Cowboys in Texas Stadium. Wow was Ed trim back in those days.
